Montan wax is also known as lignite wax or OP wax. It is a hard wax obtained through solvent extraction of certain different types of lignite or brown coals. Commercially viable deposits exist in a few locations, including  Germany, and in the Ione Basin, California.

It can be  used for making car and shoe polishes, different paints, and phonograph records, and also as lubricant for  paper and plastics. About a third of total world production is used in car  polishes.
